When the Body Remembers What the Mind Has Forgotten

“Nothing bad is happening… so why is my body panicking?”

Why early overwhelming experiences often leave “body memories”

When something is too much, too fast or too alone for a child to handle—intense conflict, emotional neglect, medical procedures, accidents, chronic stress—the nervous system may:

  • go into fight, flight, freeze or fawn

How the body “remembers”

Body memory can look like:

  • tightening in your throat whenever you try to say no

  • a sudden urge to appease or fawn when someone seems upset with you

  • feeling frozen or “not in your body” in conflict or high‑stress situations

You’re not “crazy”; your nervous system is trying to complete something

When your body reacts without a clear narrative, it is easy to think: “I’m overreacting. I’m broken.
