Myth 1: “I’ll lose control and be a puppet”
Films and stage shows often suggest that a hypnotist can “take over” your mind, turn you into a zombie, or make you do bizarre things with a finger snap. In clinical hypnotherapy, this is not what happens: hypnosis is a state of focused attention and relaxation in which you remain conscious, responsive and able to come out of the state whenever you wish.
Health and professional bodies consistently emphasise that you retain control: you can hear, respond, move and reject suggestions at any point. Hypnosis works with your cooperation; without it, it simply does not deepen.
Myth 2: “I’ll say things I don’t want to say”
Another common fear is that hypnosis is some kind of truth serum that will force you to confess things you would normally keep private. In reality, you do not automatically blurt out secrets; you can choose what to share just as you do in normal conversation, and people can even withhold or lie under hypnosis if they decide to.
Ethical hypnotherapists are trained to respect consent and confidentiality, and to stay within clear professional boundaries. You are invited to explore what feels relevant and safe enough, not pressured to reveal anything you do not want to discuss.
Reality: A collaborative process where your consent is central
Clinical and ethical guidelines describe hypnosis as a collaborative procedure, not something “done to” a passive subject. Before starting, a responsible practitioner explains what hypnosis involves, answers questions, and obtains informed consent—including your right to stop at any time.
During the session, increased suggestibility does not erase your values or autonomy; you can resist, ignore or internally disagree with any suggestion that does not feel right, and those suggestions typically lose their effect. In practice, the work focuses on changes you want—for example, easing anxiety, changing habits, or updating old beliefs—within clear ethical and legal safeguards designed to protect your autonomy.
